Accreditation

Driver Authorisation

All NSW taxi drivers must hold a current Driver Authorisation from Transport for NSW. Requires criminal record check, medical clearance, English proficiency, and passenger transport module. Renewed every 5 years.

Vehicle Standards

Taxi Vehicle Licensing

All taxis must display a current taxi licence plate, pass annual vehicle inspection, meet age limits, comply with wheelchair accessible standards if applicable, and carry mandatory CCTV security cameras.

Fare Rules

Metered Fares & Surcharges

Taxi fares in Greater Sydney are set by IPART. Meters must be approved and sealed. Surcharges apply for night rate, public holidays, tolls, and booking fees. Overcharging carries a $3,000 penalty.

Insurance

Compulsory Insurance

Taxi operators must hold CTP insurance, comprehensive vehicle insurance, and public liability insurance for passengers. Drivers working under bailment should verify which policies apply to them directly.

Point to Point Levy

Industry Levies & Fees

Under the Point to Point Transport Act 2016, operators pay a booking service levy and drivers pay an accreditation fee. TDA disputes the level of these levies relative to rideshare competitors.
